When it comes to lipstick, red always has so much to offer. A timeless, elegant red immediately elevates any look to “chic” status and instantly makes teeth appear brighter and skin look clearer. Red lipstick will always be the scene-stealing, uncompromisingly sexy star of any look.
And there’s no better time than autumn to adopt a show-stopping crimson pout. To get maximum colour payoff, I start by lightly dusting my lips with powder and then line with a nude lip pencil to stop the colour from feathering throughout the day. I adore matte textures; a shine-free finish most definitely packs more of a punch with richly pigmented formulas. Nevertheless, this year has seen the return of high-impact glosses, creams and stains, in reds with varying degrees of boldness that suit all tastes. Here are a few of my favourites this season in four different and very unique textures.
YSL Vernis à Lèvres Vinyl Cream- Rouge Remix
These surprisingly creamy lip stains have a lightweight feel and colour the lips with intense pigment. They start off sheer, giving lips a soft sheen but can be built up to a full coverage lacquer. Whilst the initial colour does where off a little quicker than I’d like, it leaves behind a very pretty stain that lasts for hours.
Rouge Dior- Matte 999
This shade has long been one of my favourite reds in the Dior range (alongside Trafalgar), so I was very pleased when it launched this year in a gorgeous matte texture. The formula is smooth, creamy and very lightweight for a shine-free lipstick. Whilst it is very pigmented and super long lasting, it’s not quite as opaque as Diorifique, but it can easily be built up to achieve maximum coverage.
Shiseido Rouge Rouge- Poppy
This vibrant orange-red is my favourite out of the entire red-inspired line. It’s a happy, electric shade that brings me instant joy. The formula itself is, in my opinion, one of the best lipsticks Shiseido has ever launched. It’s creamy, rich and gives four to six hour comfortable wear.
Christian Louboutin Loubilaque- Rouge Louboutin
This full coverage, opaque liquid lipstick is the epitome of glamour. Not only is the tube itself a work of artisanal excellence, the formula has some seriously impressive staying power for a high-shine lip colour. This shade is a true red that looks great on all skin tones.
